MYTHOLOGY : Zone 02 : Earliest Cosmic Angst material remastered

The Mythology project continues. Revisiting 15 years of mythic synthesizer music. With the benefit of hindsight and a clearer sense of intent, I am not only remastering all significant work, but also structuring this personal mythology into a number of phases, or 'zones'. While there could be some adjustments to the music along the way, ultimately the project will result in more available material across the various iterations of Mild Peril.

These pieces are from 2012 and are essentially outtakes from the album 'Unknown Zones' that came the following year. Orbs I and II are variations on the opening to that album, and when writing them the image I had in my mind was of some kind of abstract idea of a probe, or craft, or some sort of body moving through deep space. That sense of motion is continued and accentuated with Orbs II and V. Orb IV was originally an interpretation of a song by a friend's band, that turned into its own thing eventually.

I performed live for the first time this same year (as Mild Peril - the Cosmic Angst name came later) and much of my composition at the time was based around feasible live performance. Orb V in particular was originally intended for my second gig in early 2013, but was then completely reworked into what became 'Crisis In Gamma Zone', performed in full at that gig. You can hear some of the same sounds here and on that long-form piece from 'Unknown Zones'.

Presenting tracks like these as their own complete work was one of the driving ideas behind the Mythology project. While I am completely happy with what I put on 'Unknown Zones', 'Orb I - VI' serves as a good prologue, I think.
